Mexican Drug Cartels

In an article found on suite101.com author Frank Crimi talks about the unavoidable problem of Mexican drug cartels murdering and kidnapping anyone who poses a threat to their operations. One of the most startling announcements found in the article was a statement by Felipe Calderon that the "Mexican government is losing its grip on the fight..." and that "Mexicans can expect more violence in the days and months ahead, a sobering admission to a nation which has already lost 28,000 lives since the assault on the drug cartels began." That is ten times more lives lost due to Mexican drug cartels than American troops killed in Iraq. And this is happening not in some far off distant country but right in our own backyard

How successful has the "War on drugs" really been? I can only assume that these Mexican cartels are bringing weapons, and drugs into the United States because it is so profitable. And the United States government is feeding the flames by continuing this policy of Illegal Marijuana. San Jose's police chief Joseph McNamara agrees that marijuana should be legalized to stop criminals from profiting off the illegal drug trade, the police chief is quoted in saying, "I think it's a golden opportunity for California voters to strike a real blow against the Mexican drug cartels and drug gangs... that would be a greater blow than we ever struck during my 35 years in law enforcement."

Cartels are profiting off the drug trade because there are no regulations, or way to monitor the drugs going in and out of the country. We must be pro active and fight this problem before more lives, and greater consequences develop.
